Upper School Leadership

This club is an opportunity to cultivate and strengthen leadership skills in students who show strong character, a positive attitude, and have demonstrated ability to get along with and motivate others. It is intended for students who have a desire to be a role model and for those who actively contribute to our student body.

Yearbook

The Yearbook Club will focus on piecing together a book of memories of our year at Brookhaven Innovation Academy. Students will take pictures and write short descriptions. As a team, we will outline a format of the yearbook and edit as we go throughout the year. We will work together as a team to create a memorable book for all staff and students of the year.

Math Team

Math Team will be spending time looking at competition mathematics, with speed drills and precision exercises. Students will be taught quick ways to process and use scratch paper to make quick mathematical decisions. We will also look to have guest speakers in Mathematics related fields: there is a roller coaster design lead for Disney already lined up. I look forward to sharing my love of mathematics with my team!

How to join: Please sign up for interest HERE and students will be invited to take a short competition level assessment on August 23 during lunch with Mr. Carter. Based on the results of the assessment, Mr. Carter will form his math team and notify all who took the assessment.

Student Council

The Brookhaven Innovation Academy Student Council exists to make BIA an even better place. It is a group of student representatives from grades 3-7 who work together to plan special events, fundraisers, and give a voice to all BIA students. Council members will develop a sense of what makes a good citizen, experience working as a team, work to increase school pride, and debate issues that are important to BIA students.

Safety Patrol

BIA is excited to begin the implementation of the Safety Patrol Program, which is sponsored by AAA.
The primary purpose of the program is to enhance the safety of our students. In addition, this promotes the development of leadership skills, good citizenship qualities and sound academic skills.
A safety patrol’s job is to model for students the safety rules that have been taught in the classroom, to assist students in safe transitions throughout the building and to assist students as they arrive and depart.

School Paper/Broadcast Club

The Broadcast / Newspaper Club’s purpose is to highlight & inform students about current school and world related events through technology. Club members have a passion for writing, technology, and broadcast journalism. Students will use modern technology to broadcast the news through video/ print media. They will learn to present news in an engaging and professional fashion and to work together as team. Application and good attendance required.

Mindfulness

This club will include meditation/breathing and mindfulness exercises. Some yoga postures will be included in this club as well. We will also read and discuss ways we can incorporate mindfulness into our everyday lives.

Lego League Jr.

Through a PBL approach, students will engage in sessions where they work together to research a real-world problem and create a poster and working Lego model of what they learn. This year’s challenge is Aqua Adventure, where students will learn about water as a resource, learn where their daily water comes from, and what happens on its way to them.

Science Olympiad

Children are born curious and eager to explore the world around them. Brookhaven Innovation Academy Science Club provides programs designed to develop these natural inclinations. It is never too early to connect children to science. BIA science club members will participate in fun and interactive exploration of different STEM topics, including chemistry, engineering, environmental science, physics, and more. They will also prepare for and participate in the Science Olympiad in May. “For the past 33 years, Science Olympiad has led a revolution in science education. Dance

The dance program at BIA will allow students to explore the technique and choreography of several dance styles, including ballet, lyrical, jazz and hip hop. Every week, students will have a fun exercise warm-up and work on across-the-floor technique, followed by a short combination. Students have the opportunity to perform for parents at the end of each semester.

Choir

Any student in 3rd-7th grade who enjoys singing and performing and can commit to weekly rehearsals is welcome to join BIA’s chorus. This ensemble will allow students to further develop singing skills and musical literacy while working with other motivated students in a performance-centric and goal-based environment. Students will prepare music to perform at an annual concert in addition to other performance opportunities throughout the semester, and within the chorus students will have opportunities to play instruments in a performance setting, accompanying the ensemble.

Soccer

The BIA Soccer Club will be hosted by Coach Derrick. Coach Derrick has coached professionally for 14 years and has a USSF B License, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and NSCAA Director of Coaching qualifications. The after school soccer club curriculum will be focused on using small sided games to teach and encourage ball familiarity, creativity, and confidence.

Art

Art club students will have the opportunity to study the works of famous artists and create their own masterpieces. The aim of the art group is to develop children’s artistic abilities in a relaxed and stimulating environment giving them the opportunity to explore and experiment with different mediums.

Show Choir

Any student in 4th-7th grade who has a passion for performing and can commit to weekly rehearsals is welcome to join BIA’s Show Choir. This ensemble will allow students to further develop musical literacy and abilities including singing, playing instruments, and moving in rhythm with a group while working with other motivated students in a performance-centric and goal-based environment. Students will prepare music to perform at an annual concert in addition to other performance opportunities throughout the semester. Within the show choir students will have opportunities to work on their abilities to perform solo as well as in groups of various sizes, and to play instruments in a performance setting, accompanying the ensemble.

Basketball

During club time, we will focus on basic basketball fundamentals with a strong concentration on teamwork, sportsmanship, and effective communication. Students will learn the proper ways of shooting, dribbling, passing and other fun techniques associated with basketball. This club will be fun and exciting for all students who has the desire to participate.

Cross Country

BIA Cross Country is a fun club for students to develop a passion for running. We will be doing a variety of activities for students to accomplish this including running games and long runs. Every student participating will be encouraged to run their own pace while challenging themselves to become a better runner every day.

Homes For Our Home (HFOH)

Unlike traditional schools, BIA receives no funding for facilities, leaving the school at a distinct financial disadvantage.  School leadership has chosen to turn this adversity into an opportunity by adopting a signature fundraising program that builds on teaching community outreach to children while incorporating Project-based Learning.
