Julie joined Brookhaven Innovation Academy during the end of the 2017 – 2018 school year as the Head of School. Tolbert comes to BIA from Oconee County Schools where she most recently served in leadership roles at the school and district level and as a fifth-grade teacher. Tolbert earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Early Childhood Education from Piedmont College and her Specialist’s degree in Educational Leadership from Georgia College and State University.
Julie and her husband, Brien, have been married for 35 years and have two children. Their son, Beau (24), is completing his national firefighter certification; their daughter, Riley (20), is a junior at the University of Georgia pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education. Julie likes to spend her time outdoors hiking and going to the lake. Among her volunteer commitments in the community, Julie has worked with the Northeast Georgia Food Bank, Relay for Life and Food for Kids. She and her family attend Athens Church in Athens where she has served as a volunteer in the pre-school ministry.
Ms. Tracy Islam
Associate Head of School
Tracy Islam is the founding Associate Head of School at Brookhaven Innovation Academy. As a Maryland native, Tracy attended Towson University for her undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and obtained a master’s degree in Educational Leadership. She taught in the Howard County Public School System in Maryland for the bulk of her career and her experiences were richly varied. She taught kindergarten and second grade as a classroom teacher and summer school for rising first graders. In addition, Tracy has co-taught with ESOL teachers and special education teachers in fully inclusive classrooms.
She was a member of the Curriculum Development Team, served as the data leader for her teaching teams and as the Professional Development Site Liaison for her school. In that work, she worked alongside universities to support and mentor both intern teachers and teachers serving as mentors. Tracy also taught in Fulton County Schools as a second grade STEM teacher.
Outside of teaching, Tracy enjoys cooking, trying new restaurants, shopping, traveling and cheering on the Washington Redskins.
